Working for over 40 years in Portugal, the Australian winemaker leads the winemaking team of WineStone Group.
David Baverstock is Winemaker of the Year in Portugal. The distinction was awarded by Revista de Vinhos, in its annual gala that recognizes the most outstanding personalities in the Portuguese Wine industry. This distinction highlights the work developed by David Baverstock over 40 years in Portugal – nowadays leading the winemaking team of WineStone Group and creating some of the most remarkable Portuguese wines (Ravasqueira, Quinta de Pancas, Quinta do Côtto, Paço de Teixeiró e Krohn).
It is the fourth time that David Baverstock receives the distinction of Winemaker of the Year, exactly 25 years after the first recognition (previously in 1999, 2013 e 2015). Which proves his ability to adapt and to evolve, creating the best wines, always in a perfect balance between a more classic side and an irreverent and restless spirit.
“I am extremely proud of David’s award. It is the recognition he deserves for his unwavering dedication to all WineStone winemaking teams and to the results of our portfolio. His passion for winemaking, not only creates exceptional wines, but also inspires our teams and elevates the entire Portuguese wine industry”, says Pedro Pereira Gonçalves, CEO of WineStone. He adds: “The affirmation of WineStone and our wines in Portugal and around the world has David’s signature. For great wines, great winemakers. We couldn’t be more honored to have the best of them working for WineStone.”
For David Baverstock, Chairman Winemaker at WineStone, “this is a touching tribute that makes me very happy. It was this industry, in Portugal, that allowed me to work in what is my great passion, developing beautiful projects with unique characteristics. And that allowed me to choose to live, with my family, in a country that proved, more than four decades ago, that it was possible to produce intense wines of immense quality, capable of competing among the best. Being able to continue doing so at WineStone, with ambition and challenged daily by a team of enormous quality and enthusiasm, is an immense honor.”
Born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1955, David Baverstock has long been the most Portuguese of Australians. With a degree in Enology from Roseworthy Agricultural College, he soon began collaborating with Portuguese companies, starting to live in Portugal more than 35 years ago. Commander of the Order of Business Merit, in the Agricultural category (2015), David Baverstock has a deep understanding of Portuguese wine and its diverse terroirs, from Bairrada to Port Wines, from Douro to Alentejo, among several other adventures. He is Chairman Winemaker at WineStone, responsible for managing the winemaking of Krohn (Porto), Paço de Teixeiró (Vinho Verde), Quinta do Côtto (Douro), Quinta de Pancas (Lisbon) and Ravasqueira (Alentejo).
